Playing the piano is a combination of an art and a science. As a science, there are certain rules and principles which must be followed. As with any other art, progression in your pianistic skills requires diligent practice.

About Liberty Martin, Piano Teacher

Early Musical Training

Liberty Patricia Martin was born in Chattanooga, TN.  At the age of six her family moved to South Dakota, where she grew up.  She is the oldest of five children. She completed a homeschooled education with the School of Tomorrow, graduating from highschool in 1994.

Liberty Martin began playing the piano in fourth grade at the age of nine when someone gave her family a piano. Her teacher, who was her mother, used John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano, which is no longer modern by today's standards!   Liberty would practice on the piano to fill up time while waiting for the rest of the family to get ready to go to church.

Liberty began playing for congregational singing at the age of 12 on an organ. It was at this time that she learned the footwork of organ playing.  However, she continued to prefer the piano and prefers it still.  (She tried the guitar, but it  needs tuning each time you play it; she also tried the flute, but it takes up a lot of breath and has to be assembled, taken apart and cleaned each time it is played.)

Formal Music Education

By the time Liberty attended college, she had had only the one year of lessons in fourth grade.  But practicing came naturally and she was self-motivated to play, and play she did.  She knew little of the “brains” or theory, behind the music that she played.  However, she had a firm grasp on the note names, and that was enough for her to pass the two week trial of Freshman Music Theory at a small private college.  Twelve students tried out, and five or six passed.  A couple people even changed their major.  By the end of two years of Theory, just three of the twelve had made it through.

Liberty Martin was awarded the Alfred B. Smith Music Scholarship in 1997 for her diligence and hard work.  She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Sacred Music from Ambassador Baptist College in Lattimore, North Carolina, in 1999.   The degree included (along with a double major in Bible) pedagogy, music theory (2 years), music history, choral arranging, choral conducting, various other music related classes, and private piano lessons (4 years).

Throughout the years of training, people would often ask, “What can you do with a Sacred Music degree?”  The answer was always, “teach piano lessons.” And that is happily what she is doing now!

Professional Musician

Liberty began teaching piano lessons in 1997, and has also taught college piano classes.    She has taught in the Shrewsbury, PA, area since 2002. She has been the church pianist in various churches for 14 years.  She likes to sing harmony.  Her background and focus could be described as sacred/ classical/ traditional.
